Abstract
Abstract: This paper describes a multivariable method for coding nonverbal aspects of individual psychotherapy. In this system trained observers record four complementary aspects of the movement behavior of both patient and therapist as they occur throughout the session: 1) relationships between the participants’ positions and movements; 2) the positions that are maintained; 3) specific actions —what each does; and 4) qualitative, dynamic aspects of movements accompanying speech. The development and rationale for this new system is described in relation to other interaction analyses methods. Initial efforts to train observers in the method indicate it can be learned during a brief videotape training period and that adequate levels of observer reliability should be achieved for most items. Efforts to improve the reliability of difficult-to-observe aspects are discussed. The method is developed for research use only and presented in the hope that those investigating psychotherapy may consider it applicable to their lines of inquiry.
